Land of Broken Hearts: Story. Continues…
RT: Land of Broken Hearts will soon be released on LP.
André: I´m pretty excited about LOBH coming out on vinyl… it´s about time! Which – in turn – brings back lots of memories from that particular time (yes, I´m that old, turning 106 next year).
RT: When the idea of making a record came in ?
André: After a few years of playing every club we´ve heard of and sending out hundreds of demo tapes to every record company in existence and still not getting anywhere we decided to make a record by ourselves. Steen, Henrik, Kenneth and I jumped right into it with absolutely no idea what this decision will lead to.
RT: Where did you record and mix ?
André: It´s been recorded in my first studio – Mirand – between fall of ´90 and spring of ´91… 16 tracks (Fostex B16) and countless technical limitations (borrowing extra gear from all over the place… fortunately, one of my friends worked at the music store Super Sound so I could occasionally use a few things… but only during weekends while the store was closed… thanks, Knud :- ). Anyway, we recorded it as good as we could and immediately started looking for the place to mix.
Obviously, due to the fact that we had literally no money, the search´s been taking a while until that one particular day: we played a show in one of the clubs in Copenhagen and Peter Brander happened to be hired to do the sound that night.
After the show we were all having a drink and I remember Peter going: “You sound good, guys, you should record an album or something”. Well, we just finished recording one but still can´t afford to mix it (as we weren´t at any label at the time). “Don´t worry” – he goes – “we´ll figure something out”.
And we did: a couple of weeks later he had a few open dates and we went into his Media Sound Studio to mix our first album! After all these years we´re still very grateful to Peter (who´s been one of my closest friends ever since besides being our FOH mixer forever) for reaching out and help.
